Freeform has released a new poster confirming that Cloak & Dagger season 2 will premiere on April 4. Starring Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt, the socially-aware young adult TV show was one of the most popular superhero shows of 2018. The first season saw the two teenagers learn to use their powers, and prepared the way for a dangerous new threat.

Created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, Cloak & Dagger are a popular superhero duo who have often worked alongside Spider-Man, and were even briefly members of the X-Men. In the comics, the two runaways were injected with a mysterious drug that triggered some sort of genetic mutation, granting them both superpowers. Season 1 heavily adapted that origin story, transposing it on to the new location of New Orleans, and presenting them as a mystic “Divine Pairing” destined to save the city.

Freeform has officially confirmed that Cloak & Dagger season 2 will debut with a two-hour premiere on April 4, releasing a stunning new poster and tweeting a simple message: “Mayhem is coming.” That’s a clear reference to a character straight from the comics, Brigid O’Reilley, who is expected to play a major role in season 2. In the first season, O’Reilley was a police officer who’d moved to New Orleans from New York, played by Emma Lahana. She was a friend and ally of Cloak and Dagger, but in the season finale was exposed to the energy unleashed by Roxxon, and was transformed into an enhanced being. It sounds as though Tandy and Tyrone will be finding out what it means when a friend becomes one of your deadliest foes.

But Mayhem won’t be the only enemy out there for the teenage vigilantes. Season 1 subtly hinted at another major villain from the comics, a psychic entity named Mr. Jip, an almost demonic being who jumps from host body to host body. In the comics, Mr. Jip was a man who feared death and found his way to Kamar Taj in order to learn the secrets of the Ancient One. He is drawn to the darkest and most corrupt of men, feeding upon their very souls for sustenance, and in the comics he became obsessed with Cloak. Mr. Jip believed Cloak’s Darkforce powers made him immortal, and lived the idea of claiming such power forever.

Cloak & Dagger season 1 was intimately connected to the wider MCU, even featuring Roxxon as a recurring threat. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see showrunner Joe Pokaski continue that pattern on to season 2, using a villain who has strong ties to Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, it’s also possible the stars of Marvel’s Runaways will appear in Cloak & Dagger season 2; Cloak and Dagger crossed paths with those other young superheroes in the comics, and the stars have both teased some sort of crossover.

Fans will no doubt be thrilled to see just how this plays out; now it’s confirmed they won’t have long to wait.
