The sequel introduced new characters and threats, and the movie earned mostly positive reviews and outgrossed the original worldwide. While the second movie didn’t necessarily set up Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3, the franchise’s continued success seemed to make it a given.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3 Was Never Confirmed
Despite the success of the second movie, Sony has never given any indication it was developing Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3. The cast and crew indicated they would be willing to reprise their roles during promotional interviews for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and the movie’s co-director Cody Cameron stated there were plenty of ideas for a potential third entry, but the decision lay with the studio.
The author of the original book series wrote a trilogy, with the third book titled Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3: Planet Of The Pies, which was set on Mars. While this concept could have formed the basis for a third movie, the first two Cloudy movies were only loosely based on the books, so it could have gone in a completely different direction.
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Received A Prequel TV Show
With no sign of a third movie happening, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs received a prequel series on Cartoon Network. The show follows Flint during his awkward high school years and a typical episode involves the young scientist inventing a crazy device and then have to undo the damage it causes. The show also reveals Flint met love interest Sam Sparks as a teenager, which contradicts the first movie.
The show explains this by Flint promising to create a memory eraser for her if she ever leaves Swallow Falls so she doesn’t become sad about their lost friendship. While the Cloud With A Chance Of Meatballs show performed well in ratings, the reviews were typically negative.
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3 Probably Won’t Happen
While there’s a chance Sony could revisit the franchise, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3 likely won’t happen now. It’s been six years since the last movie and while the prequel series proves there’s still a fanbase, Sony seems focused on other projects. That said, Lord and Miller recently enjoyed great success writing and producing Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, so there could be renewed interest in a Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 3.
