Clueless is getting the reboot treatment in the form of a mystery TV show - with Dionne as the lead character. CBS TV Studios is giving the 1995 cult classic film a makeover, with a twist on the original plotline. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Clueless is a coming-of-age romantic comedy set in proverbial Beverly Hills, that became one of the most popular teen comedies of the 1990s.

Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, Clueless chronicles the adventures of Cher Horowitz (Silverstone), a “Valley Girl type” idolized for her popularity and wealth among the social circles of Bronson Alcott High School. Flanked by her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash), Cher sets her sights on new girl Tai (Brittney Murphy) in an attempt to give her an extreme makeover. Hilarity ensues when Tai garners more popularity than Cher, and affairs of the heart become complex when Cher begins to fall for her ex-stepbrother Josh (Paul Rudd). Based loosely on Jane Austen’s novel Emma, Clueless had a huge influence on fashion trends, jargon, and self-expression. Released over 20 years ago, Clueless has spawned a spin-off television sitcom (sans Silverstone and Rudd), comic books, a Broadway musical, and was in early development for a remake by Paramount Pictures. Now, the world of spoiled Beverly Hills teens is making a comeback with an interesting twist.

As reported to THR, Clueless is being rebooted as a contemporary mystery series. Resembling Means Girls meets Riverdale, Clueless will center on Dionne instead of queen-bee Cher. After Cher mysteriously vanishes, Dionne must step up as the most popular girl in high school and unravel the puzzling events that led to her best friend’s disappearance.

Clueless is in the creative hands of producers Corinne Brinkerhoff (Jane the Virgin), Tiffany Grant, and Robert Lawrence. Writers Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace) will tackle the uniquely 2020 L.A. storyline. As production gets closer, more details will unravel - including the pivotal casting choice of leading lady Dionne. CBS TV Studios has a packed slate with development of a Walker, Texas Ranger remake for the CW, and involvement with Netflix’s Dead to Me.

Dionne Davenport has been regarded as one of the most iconic best friend characters in film history. The titular right-hand woman was the glue that held the high school halls together, while toting a tough exterior and keen fashion sense. Given that it has been two decades since Clueless shook the teen world, it is ideal timing on CBS TV Studios part to give a makeover to the storyline. No doubt Dionne from Clueless has been a character deserving of the spotlight - and her own series - for quite some time.
