Seasons 1 and 2 of YouTube Premium’s Cobra Kai are headed to DVD and Digital platforms, and Screen Rant has an exclusive look at a behind-the-scenes blooper reel included in the set. The series became a surprise hit for the streaming service, straddling the line between nostalgia-laced sequel and reboot. It also brought back Ralph Macchio as a now grown Daniel LaRusso, as well as William Zabka as his once and future nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. Over the course of two seasons, the results have been an entertaining series with a lot of heart.
As much as Cobra Kai features the renewed rivalry between Johnny and Daniel, it’s also about another generation taking up the mantle of both Johnny’s newly reopened Cobra Kai dojo and Daniel’s would-be competitor, Miyagi-Do Karate. The dueling dojos have attracted their fair share of clientele, primarily Johnny’s up-and-coming apprentice, Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), who has perhaps learned all the wrong lessons about karate from his unconventional sensei. On the other side are Daniel’s daughter Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) and Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keen, the estranged son of Johnny Lawrence.

Amid all various multi-generational storylines at play, Cobra Kai also makes good use of its characters’ interest in karate, which, as the exclusive clip from the upcoming DVD set reveals, can be kind of tricky for the show’s cast. The clip is essentially a blooper reel of the young actors trying and mostly failing to get their kick, punch, or block right the first time. As with any series requiring actors to pull off highly choreographed fight sequences, there’s going to be a considerable learning curve. While most of the fights seen in Cobra Kai wind up looking authentic and well executed, it’s clear from the above clip that’s not always the case. Still, the actors do a good job selling their martial arts competency, even when they’re ostensibly flailing about. Moreover, the behind-the-scenes clip makes it look as though the show’s set is fairly loose, and willing to let the actors try until they get it right.
The series has been a bright spot in YouTube Premium’s lineup of original content, which should keep the service competitive as the streaming wars heat up with the launch of Apple TV+ and Disney+, and next year’s launch of HBO Max. Though it may not have the buzz around it any of these services do, YouTube has a charming original series in Cobra Kai.
