Windows 11, like any new operating system, has had its fair share of issues. The latest sees many users with HDR displays (and some without) having problems with colors displaying correctly in image editing applications.
As first reported by Windows Latest, a bug in Windows 11 could prevent specific image editing applications from rendering colors correctly on HDR displays (and occasionally on other displays, too). Most users have reported the issue when editing pictures with white colors or on a white background. Instead of white, the images will look bright yellow or other colors.
Clearly, image editing is one place where inaccurate colors are more than just an annoyance. Knowing that the colors you see are correct can be the difference between accurately color grading and color-correcting a photo and not.
After the initial report, Microsoft confirmed the bug:
As far as fixing the issue goes, Microsoft says, “We are working on a resolution and estimate a solution will be available in late January.”
This issue occurs when certain color-rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected, and color profile options available in the Windows 11 Settings page, including Microsoft Color Control Panel, are expected to function correctly.
That means that anyone editing images with an HDR display will need to be extra careful to ensure the colors are accurate while waiting around a month for the update to arrive.
