After claiming the lives of over 100 people and spreading to roughly 15 countries, the coronavirus has officially breached US soil. There are now five confirmed cases in a current total of four different states.

On January 21, 2020, the first incident involving the viral respiratory illness known as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, MERS-CoV, or simply  the coronavirus, was reported. The outbreak started in Wuhan, China, and it has since affected just under 6,000 individuals in China alone, spreading into a number of other countries. To date, 132 people have died due to complications brought on by the virus, according to the World Health Organization. Now, as of January 29, there have been five confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (via: NBC News).

As of now, there have been five reported cases in the US related to the coronavirus. NBC News has released a map of the United States highlighting the confirmed coronavirus cases, and will be updating in real-time in the event of additional cases. The locations of the confirmed cases include Everett, Washington; Los Angeles County, California; Orange County, California; Maricopa County, California; and Chicago, Illinois. Take a look at the map below to see the affected areas:

One of the more unusual incidents related to the coronavirus outbreak is the spike in sales for the mobile game Plague Inc. The player’s objective in the game is to infect the world with various diseases - one of which is even the “Simian Flu” from Planet of the Apes. Already a popular game on mobile devices, sales have reportedly skyrocketed. In fact, according to a statement from the game’s developer, Ndemic Creations, this tends to happen any time there is a global viral outbreak. However, a statement on the websites insists that the game is not intended to sensationalize “serious real-world issues;” instead, the basis of the game is meant to inform, especially for people who want “to find out more about how diseases spread and to understand the complexities of viral outbreaks,” especially after a real-life outbreak.

As for the coronavirus in the US, despite the fact that there have been confirmed cases, it’s important to mention that there have also been a considerable amount of reported cases that ultimately turned out to be negative - 68, to be exact. As of now, it’s more or less a waiting game to see how/if other infections develop, and how the US will ultimately respond to prevent the outbreak from spreading any further.
