YouTube channel Corridor Digital uploaded another Boston Dynamics parody video, and it was jokingly compared to the 2015 movie, Chappie. Chappie is a sci-fi film set in a dystopian South Africa. It follows a robot with heightened artificial intelligence that was stolen by a group of gang members.

Chappie was directed by Neill Blomkamp, who has had previous forays in to sci-fi filmaking with Elysium and District 9, the latter of which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Chappie was praised for its visual effects, as well as its unique take on the use of artificial intelligence in robots, a common trope used in science fiction.

Corridor is known for their cinematic videos that focus on action choreography and visual effects. One of the most popular series are parodies of videos from Boston Dynamics. Boston Dynamics’ vision is to create some of the most advanced robots in the world, and their YouTube channel highlights their robots’ capabilities. Viewers of these Boston Dynamics videos were quick to point out how these videos looked like they were plucked from a sci-fi movie. What Corridor found the most interesting was the way that Boston Dynamics tests their robots, trying to get the robots to fall and generally doing things to prevent them from doing their designed job. Corridor decided to parody this concept, creating “Bosstown Dynamics” videos that showed a “robot” getting physically abused by its creators to see if it can still do its job. In Corridor’s latest video, the robot is shown learning how to utilize different guns while continuing to take a abuse from its creators. Twitter user Nathan Rogers pointed out the conceptual differences between this video and Chappie, joking that “Chappie 2 is looking great.” Chappie has a similar scene in which the titular robot learns how to use weapons.

Corridor’s Bosstown Dynamics parodies aren’t their only videos to go viral. Corridor has been making interesting concept videos for years, some of there most popular including “World’s LONGEST Lightsaber,” “Real GTA,” and “Nerf John Wick.” Corridor Digital’s sister channel, Corridor Crew, actually has some viral hits of their own. Their series “VFX Artists React” and “Stuntmen React” has become extremely popular. Fans enjoy watching professionals explain why scenes in their favorite Hollywood productions work so well or why they’re so poor.

Originally, Chappie was supposed to be the first movie in a trilogy, but it was critically panned and didn’t make enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel. However, since its release Chappie has gained a cult following, with creators like Corridor clearly being influenced by the film. It is possible that Chappie under-performed because it had to compete with other sci-fi films that dealt with artificial intelligence at the time, such as Ex Machina. Perhaps one day Blomkamp will decide to revisit the property and make a real Chappie 2.
