First released in 2010, Costume Quest was a digital-only game on PSN and Xbox Live. It starred fraternal twins Wren and Reynold in a universe where people can become the costumes they wear. The concept was originally created by Double Fine Productions who are best known for other cult classics like Brutal Legend, as well as the upcoming Psychonauts 2. Animation for the show was handled by Frederator Studios, the artists behind Adventure Time, The Fairly Oddparents, and Castlevania.

There’s plenty of content for the show to pull from as the games go beyond a typical Halloween adventure. The first game of the series had Christmas themed DLC called Grubbins on Ice, which had players travel into the monster’s world. The proper sequel Costume Quest 2 was equally ridiculous, with a time-traveling evil dentist trying to rid the world of Halloween forever. The games also featured a variety of costumes from standard fair like robots and wizards to more strange outfits like french fries or the entire solar system. Each one has its own unique powers and abilities, with the exception of the candy corn costume - which does absolutely nothing.

Costume Quest originally started as a concept in an event Double Fine calls their “Amnesia Fortnight.” During this event, the company breaks off into small groups to prototype new game ideas over 2 weeks. After only a year in development, Costume Quest came out to mostly positive reception thanks to its smart writing and clever jokes. Both games in the series were shorter RPGs compared to other games in the genre, taking anywhere from 6-12 hours to get through the main story.

The cartoon will take some liberties with the source material, such as making the costumes supernatural and allowing the monsters to disguise themselves as humans. Wren and Reynold will also be given more distinct personalities compared to their video game counterparts, so it’ll be interesting to see how this show fleshes out their personalities throughout the season.
