Kaya Scodelario stars in the first trailer for Crawl, a survival thriller film produced by Sam Raimi. It was through the horror/thriller genre that Raimi delivered early hits in The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, before climbing up the Hollywood ladder to helm a mostly great Spider-Man trilogy. Even though it has been six years since Raimi has directed a movie, he’s remained busy on TV with Ash vs Evil Dead and through producing films like Don’t Breathe.
Almost a year ago exactly, it was announced that Raimi added a hurricane-set horror film titled Crawl as one of his next producing efforts. Crawl is directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and was previously said to be a movie featuring a young woman trying to rescue her father during a hurricane, but then sees them trapped inside a flooding house with the weather and animals putting them in danger. Kaya Scodelario of The Maze Runner and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fame then signed on to star, and now is front and center during the first trailer.
Paramount released the first trailer for Crawl, showcasing the suspenseful and intriguing story that Scodelario is leading. Fellow Maze Runner cast member Barry Pepper plays her father in the movie, but judging by the trailer, the majority of the film will rest of Scodelario’s shoulders. The trailer, and the first poster, can be seen below:
The trailer sounds incredibly similar to the footage shown during Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon earlier this year, but now everyone is able to experience the footage for themselves. And on that front, this first trailer for Crawl effectively conveys the thrills and sense of dread that it wants. The singular setting gives the film a similar feeling as Don’t Breathe, but the two Raimi-produced thrillers could not be any more different in the situation. Just as Fede Alvarez was able to get a great performance out of Jane Levy in Don’t Breathe, it appears that Aja was able to do the same out Scodelario in Crawl.
As long as Crawl delivers on the quality of thrills that this trailer depicts, then a presumed small budget could help make the film financially successful when it launches this July. It will no doubt be overshadowed by Spider-Man: Far From Home releasing the week prior, but Crawl will also be going after a different audience. Because of this, it may actually be Midsommar - Ari Aster’s Hereditary followup - that poses the most competition. But, if both of the thrillers receive the type of critical reception they are hoping for, then they can also hopefully coincide in theaters.
