Apple’s earnings call yesterday was an upbeat one, and with good reason. The company reported that the holiday quarter saw it earn $88.3B in revenue and make $20B in profits – both all-time records. Coronavirus location-tracking has been one of the biggest controversies with contact tracking apps … The Apple/Google API deliberately takes a privacy-protecting approach, in which locations are not captured at all. But some governments argue that they need location data to identify infection hotspots in order to focus healthcare resources. New Zealand’s app, launching this week, takes an interesting compromise approach, pitched as a ‘digital diary.’ Reuters reports. It means that when someone gets a positive test, they will be able to access an accurate record of their movements prior to diagnosis....

Reuters reported today that a U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington rejected Apple’s attempt to get a sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. Apple asked the court to revisit a previous decision to reject the company’s request for the sales ban leading up to a full trial set for March 2014. The case involved patents not included in the California trial that awarded Apple a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung....

Disparate reports this morning shed a little more light on the Verizon iPhone deal we expect to hear about at 11am (Eastern). It seems the deal may cost Verzon as much as $5 billion in subsidies in year one — but is also set to steal share from AT&T while flatlining Android device sales. John Hodulik, an analyst at UBS AG told Business Week he thinks Verizon may sell 13 million iPhones with an estimated $400 subsidy this year — a total of $5....

Coming to America 2 has added another cast member from the original film, bringing back Shari Headley as Lisa McDowell. Released in 1988, Coming to America starred Eddie Murphy as African royal Prince Akeem who, together with his faithful companion Semmi (Arsenio Hall), escaped an arranged marriage and journeyed to Queens to live as a common man and find true love with a “simple” American girl. The film would prove to be another huge hit for the then-red-hot Murphy, grossing $128 million domestically ($280 million adjusted for inflation)....

The Clips app that Apple announced back in March and launched in April doesn’t exactly seem to have set the world on fire. Apple’s description made it seem simple and fun to use: The reviews, however, disagreed … It was described as confusing, complex and lacking a clear purpose.
